Kataragama Kiriwehera in Sri lanka


Kataragama ( Sinhala : කතරගම ( Katharagama ), Tamil : கதிர்காமம் ( Katharagama ) ) is a holy city of pilgrimage for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and indigenous Vedda of Sri Lanka. The people of South India also go there to worship . The city Ruhunu Maha Kataragama has devalaya , a shrine dedicated to Skanda - Murukan also known as Kataragamadevio .
Kataragama district Monaragala Uva Province , Sri Lanka. It is 228 km ESE of Colombo , capital of Sri Lanka. Although Kataragama was a small village in medieval times , today is a town of great economic development , surrounded by forest in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka. It houses ancient Buddhist stupa Kiri Pabalu . The city has a venerable history dating back to the last centuries BCE. It was the seat of government of many Sinhalese kings during the days of Rohana kingdom. Since the 1950s the city has undergone many improvements with successive governments to invest in public transportation , medical services , and business development and hotel services. Adjoins the popular Yala National Park .
