Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka


Began Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife on twenty-five acres of coconut land overlooking the river Maha Oya in Rambukkana.

Design an orphanage in the first place to bear the costs of care and protection for many of the baby elephants who became orphans as a result of various reasons. After being shifted from place to place, from Wilpattu National Park to Bentota to the Dehiwala Zoo, was established recently in Pinnawela in1975. As a result, a remote village in Pinnawela ended up sheltering orphans largest in the world. 


Having started with only five orphaned baby elephant, Pinnawela is by far the orphanage is now a very large and well-known all over the world. In 1978, the orphanage was taken under the chairmanship of National Zoological Gardens and launched a breeding program in captivity in 1982. Babies are fed with milk twice a day and old with different types of securities. 


Today Elephant Orphanage or just Pinnawela, as it's called, is a popular place for locals and foreign tourists must for. Visitors - children, young and old alike love to watch the elephant bath in the river Maha Oya which take place twice a day. It is amazing to see how they play with each other in the water like a carefree child. Some of these are also found foster homes in other countries.
